A person’s lifestyle is their set of beliefs, attitudes, and habits that influence the way they live. The word lifestyle has been used for a long time, and it has multiple definitions. Some people think it refers to the way a person spends their time, while others believe that it means their values or worldview. There are also several different theories that describe the role of a lifestyle, and these are usually divided into two categories: those that focus on the internal dimension of a person’s personality and those that focus on their external positioning within a given sociocultural context.

Theories that focus on the internal dimension of a personality tend to emphasise the concept of a lifestyle as a form of style of personality that is established in early childhood and influences a person’s behaviour throughout life. This concept of lifestyle was first expressed by Alfred Adler and has since been developed in the works of Milton Rokeach, Arnold Mitchell, and Lynn R. Kahle.

In contrast, sociological models of lifestyle focus on the idea that the behaviour of a person reflects their position in a society, and this has been referred to by a number of authors, including Georg Simmel, Max Weber, and Pierre Bourdieu. These studies have shown that the lifestyle of a person depends on both external factors (the structure that defines power relations in a given society, which is known as the “field”) and internal ones, such as their beliefs, emotions, and expectations, which are part of their habitus.

These models of lifestyle have a number of limitations, and the principal one is that they do not take into account how a person’s lifestyle changes or evolves over time. This feature is particularly important in a context such as that of health, where a person’s lifestyle can have direct effects on their mental and physical well-being. For this reason, critical health psychology argues for a model of lifestyle that emphasises the notion of a person’s own positioning and autonomy rather than that of his or her adhering uncritically to predefined and a priori rules.
