July 6 & 7 Dan Zanes & Friends: The exuberant, Grammy Award winning ![]() kid-rocker with adult appeal tunes up his uke for two consecutive-day concerts, backed by a merry band of crackerjack musicians. July 6 Champlain Valley Stage: An all-day children’s festival features storytellers Tim Jennings and Leanne Ponder, Kamikaze Comedy, musician Jon Gailmor, and construction clown Brent McCoy. July 6 “Puppets, Parades and Pageantry” Workshop: Kids spend half the day at Burlington City Arts exploring the art of public entertainment and designing their own whimsical spirit sticks, puppets, masks, and costumes. At the Flynn, we’ll spend the rest of the day learning to animate our creations and ourselves through puppetry and< theater, as young folks prepare to be a part of the largest street pageant in Vermont’s history: The Champlain 400 Parade! (July 11; see pages 21 & 22.) A special package deal includes a family pass to Dan Zanes & Friends, Aurélia’s Oratorio and other great kids’ events. July 6 & 7 Very Merry Theatre: Kids in this summer theater troupe stage Walking into the Wild, an original work by veteran Vermont writer Nancy Means Wright, for an audience of their peers. In this heartwarming story set in 1782, three young children make their way from Connecticut to their new home in Cornwall, VT. Waterfront Park, 5 p.m. both days. FREE. ![]() July 6 New England Youth Theatre: High school thespians from this Brattleboro-based acting troupe offer over-the-top sketches from the musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in a melodramatic showcase. City Hall Park, two shows at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. FREE. July 6 Queen City Radio Hour—Teen Edition: Zany comedy, upbeat music, and thoughtful spoken-word performances written and performed by Vermont teens. For the past several months, kids from Champlain Valley Union High School, Mount Mainsfield High School, and St. Johnsbury Academy have been working up skits, sketches and monologues that can play over the airwaves. They’ll perform live on stage—with music by award-winning Diana Levine’s fabulous young Rebops musicians, hailed as “Bursting with rhythm and personality” by Child Magazine. FlynnSpace, two shows at 7 & 9 p.m. Tickets $5. July 6 & 7 Bizzarium Aquarium: World-acclaimed Québec puppet troupe Les Sages Fous leads an interactive lakeside spectacle for all ages. Audience members ship out on a magical voyage where waterfront streets become canals, and buildings create fjords. ECHO/Leahy Center, 8:30 p.m. each day. Tickets $10, or $5 for kids under age 18. July 6 Cinema Champlain Series: Jacques Tati’s silent comedy, Playtime. This modern, fun-for-all-ages flick depicts the landscape of a futuristic France. City Hall Park, 8:30 p.m. FREE. July 7 Champlain Valley Stage: Storyteller-comedian Peter Burns elicits giggles, musicians Marty Morrissey and Robert Resnik perform songs about Lake Champlain, and singersongwriter Jon Gailmor gets families to sing along. Afternoon stage time highlights talented area teens Chloe Brisson, Erin Bentlage and Keeghan Nolan, plus local folk band Twist of the Wrist. City Hall Park, 2:30-8 p.m. FREE. July 7 Cinema Champlain Series: Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast. Small fans of the fairy tale absorb this pretty, surrealist French film based on the classic. City Hall Park, 8:30 p.m. FREE. June 29 – July 11 Puppets, Masks, & Other Transformations: Daily, join ECHO artist-in-residence Frank Gonzalez as he explores the magnificence of Lake Champlain’s endangered species by assisting children in the creation of puppets and masks made out of recycled objects. Participating children will be invited to march in the Champlain 400 Parade on July 11 to display their creations. ECHO/Leahy Center, 12:00- 2:00 p.m. Free with admission. July 9 – 12 Children’s Make & Take: At an activity table in the ECHO classroom, Abenaki teens show kids ages 5-12 how to make a traditional toy or craft: a faux wampum necklace or a birch-bark triangle/ball game. Children get to keep the object they create. ECHO/Leahy Center, 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Free with admission. July 12 Family Day at the Intervale: Kids go on nature walks and learn how the Abenaki used to raise and cook food, then pick ingredients to make and bake flatbread pizzas in a portable hearth. Abenaki Traditional Garden, Intervale Community Center, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. FREE. July 13 & 14 Aurélia’s Oratorio: Small fry will delight in this magical French stage-circus show created by mother-daughter team Victoria Chaplin Thierrée and Aurélia Thierrée.
