State Park Spotlight

Photo: View from atop Mount Philo

The 168-acre park is located atop Mt. Philo (968' elevation) and overlooks the Lake Champlain Valley and the Adirondack Mountains of New York. A narrow, steep road provides visitors access to the top of the mountain. This is Vermont's oldest state park, created in 1924.

Vermont Celebrates the Land

The Lake Champlain Basin is many things to many people. To scientists and historians it is a geological phenomenon unlike any other on Earth, a treasure trove of biological diversity, an evolutionary roadmap, an anthropological bonanza.

Hikers enjoy the view of the Champlain Basin from atop Mount Philo.
To anglers, boaters, cyclists, nature lovers and sunset gazers, it is a never ending source of fun, relaxation and fulfillment.

To the region’s farmers, merchants and residents it is home, heritage and  livelihood.

To visitors from across the country and around the globe, the Champlain Basin is an unforgettable symbol of the beauty, vitality and spirit of this part of the world.

In 2009, from Phillipsburg, Quebec to Whitehall, New York, and from Alburg Springs to West Bridport in Vermont, communities throughout the region will be hosting celebrations to honor the lake and the lands it nourishes, and to mark this “once in three lifetimes” quadricentennial commemoration.
