Elley-Long Music Center at Saint Michael's College

The Vermont Youth Orchestra has enriched the lives of Vermont’s youth for over four decades. Formed in 1957 to augment existing school music programs and to offer more opportunities for youth to experience orchestral music, the organization has doubled in size since its inception.Today, the VYOA offers young musicians a wide array of opportunities: five different orchestral programs, two choruses, music camps, master classes, an Endangered Instrument program, music theory, sectionals with the best educators in the state, and as always, the most unique performance experiences.

The VYOA serves over 500 students from VT, NY, and NH through invigorating programs for students in all levels of instrumental and vocal ability. Students with the highest level of performance skills make up the Vermont Youth Orchestra.

The VYO rehearses weekly during the academic year and presents three major concerts annually at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Burlington, Vermont. Additionally, the VYO presents annual school tours and run-out concerts in rural towns and appears frequently at community events.

The VYO has collaborated with artists as diverse as Midori, Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) and Trey Anastasio. They debuted at Carnegie Hall in 2004. In 2007, they successfully completed a two-week tour of China.

In 2001, the VYOA completed a $2 million capital campaign to renovate the historic cavalry drill hall in Fort Ethan Allen, creating its home: the Elley-Long Music Center at Saint Michael’s College. Recognized by the community for both historic integrity and excellent acoustics, the old drill hall rehearsal and performance space and houses all VYOA operations.
