In 2000, the Helen Porter staff with the support of a special one-time grant were able to take more than 50 of its nursing home residents for an afternoon long ferryboat ride on Lake Champlain. The cruise brought back fond and powerful memories for many residents that had spent years living on or near the lake. ![]() As part of the Quadricentennial, Helen Porter wishes to immerse its residents its residents throughout all of 2009 with past Lake memories, the history of the discovery of the Lake as well as the natural history of Lake Champlain. Nursing home administrator Neil Gruber plans to paddle the length of Lake Champlain getting pledges from donors to raise funds to pay for the bus transportation, food and entertainment for another ferryboat cruise for the residents. Throughout the year as part of the nursing home's therapeutic recreational program, intergenerational programs will be held with Addison County school children and the nursing home residents to foster a greater knowledge and understanding of Lake Champlain by all the participants. |
