Sailing 3 times daily from Burlington’s waterfront, the classic sailing vessel “Friend Ship” takes visitors back to a time to when commercial sailing craft plied Lake Champlain’s waters moving goods and passengers on a nautical highway stretching from Quebec City to New York City and westward to the Great Lakes. Along the way we sail by historic sites and over wrecks of canal schooners, a horse powered ferry, and other remnants of the Lake’s past. We take in views of geologically significant sites like the Burlington Thrust Fault, Juniper Island and Rock Dunder or “Odziozo”, long an important and sacred site to the area’s Native Americans. We observe the boat’s depth gauge as it traces the contours of the Lake’s bottom and conversation frequently shifts to the natural history of the Lake while lighthouses and breakwaters remind us of the government’s role in supporting over two centuries of trade in the Champlain Valley. ![]() ![]() No two sailing trips are the same, but discussion topics may range from the Lake’s discovery by Samuel de Champlain to “Champ” our resident monster, as well as the significant battles of the American Revolution and the War of 1812 that were fought on these waters. Environmental challenges and man’s progress in addressing them also spark lively discussions. Guests are encouraged to participate in the operation of the boat but are also free to sit back and simply enjoy the sail. Time: 3 sails daily at noon, mid-afternoon, and evening Admission fee(s): 2 hour sails: Adults $35, Children (12 and under) $20 Location: Look for the Friend Ship moored at the dock in front of ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain |

Whistling Man Schooner Company Whistling Man Schooner Co. operates the “Friend Ship” from our slip adjacent to the ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center on Burlington’s historic and beautiful waterfront. Our vessel is a reproduction of a traditional 1904 coastal sloop. It’s overall length is 43 feet and it is certified by the U.S. Coast Guard to carry up to 17 persons and 2 crew. While the Friend Ship’s design originated in Maine, it is very similar to sloops and schooners that plied Lake Champlain in the 19th and early 20th centuries. We can accommodate up to 17 people for private parties, but our two hour public sails are limited to 12 persons who enjoy comfortable seating in a roomy cockpit where captain and crew are readily available to answer questions and explain all facets of the Lake Champlain experience. Our route varies with each sail and is a function of our guests’ interests and the speed and direction of the wind. |
