Celebrate America's First Victory Tour

Date: May-31-2009 - Nov-15-2009
Location/Sponsor: Backroad Discovery Tours - Manchester
Category: History & Education

About the Event:

In 1775, Ethan Allen marched 70 miles north from his residence in Bennington, Vermont to capture Fort Ticonderoga  for America's First Victory on May 10, 1775. Two years later, the resounding victory at the Battle of Bennington was instrumental in stopping Burgoyne's march down Lake Champlain and the Hudson River Valley and ultimately surrendering at Saratoga.

In just over two hours, this tour covers over 30 points of interest and 15 sites on the National Register of Historic Places that were involved in these historic events. You will see places where the Green Mountain Boys lived, met (and drank), camped and planned their victories.

The tour leaves from Manchester and covers about 20 miles between Manchester and Bennington, Vermont. The route covered is the basic route taken by Ethan Allen marching north from Bennington and by John Stark and the Green Mountain Boys going south to the Battle of Bennington. The route includes two covered birdges and other scenic sites in the Shires of Vermont. Your guide will be Dick Smith, author of the best selling book "The Revolutionary War in Bennington County".
