Je me Souviens

Date: Jun-12-2009 - Jun-12-2009 | 06.30
Location/Sponsor: Harwood Union High School - South Duxbury
Category: Art and Music

About the Event:

Je Me Souviens

Students from across the Washington West Supervisory Union are gathering to educate the community about Vermont’s vibrant cultural history.

“Je Me Souviens” features the work of students and professionals through dance, music, drama, and art. Through each of these media students will portray the rich history of the Lake Champlain region, anchored in the 1609 arrival of Samuel de Champlain.  And to connect the past to the present, the program also explores the present day influences of these historical events, Quebecois culture, and the current presence of Francophone countries around the world.

In addition to the historical information and reenactments presented, the event is also  an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the prevalence and impact of French heritage in our community!  Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join us.

Donations will be requested to benefit the Rwanda Educational Partnership, a non-profit organization formed by Harwood Union High School teachers, students, and community members to build long-lasting relationships between Vermont communities and schools and those in Rwanda.

This project is supported in part by a grant from the Vermont Arts Council (www.vermontartscouncil.org) and the National Endowment for the Arts (www.nea.gov.)

About the Location/Sponsor:

Harwood Union High School is nestled right off of Route 100 in South Duxbury, VT.  Working diligently to be one of the best public high schools in the state, Harwood serves the communities of Waterbury, Duxbury, Fayston, Moretown, Waitsfield, and Warren.  Thanks to the strong foreign language instruction in many of the district elementary and middle schools, incredible interest and ability is demonstrated at the high school level.  About 85% of Harwood students study one of the three foreign languages offered, and many are enrolled in more than one!  The World Language department works to keep classes engaging and relevant by incorporating the greater community in much of its work.
